Black Gold emerged as the winner of an author competition and is set against the historical background of Spindletop Hill, which is described in detail in the rules booklet, where many of the active oil companies in Texas have their roots at the beginning of the 20th century.
The cradle of the oil industry
Named for a tree that grew like an inverted cone, Spindletop is considered the birthplace of the oil industry and is located just south of the town of Beaumont, Texas on the Gulf of Mexico coast. After an unprecedented amount of oil was found here at the beginning of the last century, Spindletop became the engine of the entire US industry. The big American oil companies Texaco, Gulf, Amoco, Chevron, Mobil and Exxon emerged from the oil rush of this period.
